gregory porterBorn in Sacramento, California on 4th November 1971, Gregory Porter grew up in Bakersfield before moving to Brooklyn, New York, where he began his singing career. A fan of soul music and jazz from childhood, when he would listen to Stevie Wonder and Nat King Cole, the young singer with the mellow, captivating voice soon promised to have a successful career ahead of him.

Spotted by the trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, he soon went to work on a first album comprising mostly his own songs. Recorded on 19th and 20th August 2009, his first album, called Water, was produced by Kamau Kenyatta. The specialist press was won over, making glowing comparisons with artists from Joe Williams to Donny Hathaway and taking WATER to the top of the end-of-year playlists. A Grammy Awards nomination followed. Whilst Gregory Porter was on tour in Europe and Russia, the track "1960 What? was acclaimed and remixed by leading figures from the world of electro music. When back in America, Gregory Porter started his next recording.

The simple "Be Good" came out at the end of 2011. Two years later, his reputation still growing, the singer with the eternal hat (even onstage!) was back with the album Liquid Spirit, including tracks such as "Free", "Hey Laura" and "The In Crowd". His reputation grew even further when he signed for the Blue Note label and his third album, produced by Brian Bacchus, reached number 9 in the UK and was streamed 20 million times, a record for a jazz album.  Thanks to this success, the singer was able to take his time to prepare his fourth album.

Released under the same label in May 2016, "Take me to the Alley" included the participation of Lalah Hathaway, and produced the singles "Holding On" et "Don’t Lose Your Steam". His next album, "Nat King Cole & Me" was to appear at the end of 2017. In this album, Gregory pays tribute to the famous singer by covering a dozen of his classic tracks. His musicians, together with the trumpeter Terence Blanchard for one of the songs, are accompanied by Vince Mendoza's London Studio Orchestra. A live version of this album was recorded at London's Royal Albert Hall. Called "One Night Only", it came out in November 2018.  Gregory Porter is the jazz artist of the moment, with more than 3 million albums sold.
